The Chocolate Chip Cookies I Keep Coming Back To

Some recipes you make once and move on from. Others become recipes you keep coming back to—and these chocolate chip cookies are definitely one of those for me.
I originally found this recipe from Sofi at Broma Bakery, called The BEST Chocolate Chip Cookies. The original recipe uses browned butter, and after making it myself, I started putting my own spin on it to create the version I love most. (Broma Bakery)

My HERRtruthBakes Twist
I keep the browned butter technique, but I make a few changes.
I use salted butter and dark brown sugar instead of unsalted butter and light brown sugar. I also use milk chocolate chips throughout the dough because I love the sweeter, creamier flavor.
I don’t add the kosher salt from the original recipe because I’m using salted butter.
But my favorite part comes right before the cookies go into the oven.
I place a piece of dark chocolate on top of each cookie dough ball. As they bake, the chocolate melts into the center, creating that glossy pool of dark chocolate on top.
It’s a simple little step, but it makes these cookies look—and taste—extra special.
Why I Love Them
These cookies have everything I want: golden edges, a soft and chewy center, browned-butter flavor, and plenty of chocolate.
The dark brown sugar gives them a deeper caramel flavor, while the milk chocolate keeps them sweet and creamy. Then you get that rich dark chocolate on top.
That melted chocolate is definitely my favorite part.
My Adapted Version
Ingredients
168g salted butter
212g packed dark brown sugar
50g granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 large egg yolk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
220g all-purpose flour
¾ teaspoon baking soda
210g milk chocolate chips
Dark chocolate pieces, for topping
Flaky sea salt, optional
A Note About the Recipe
This recipe is adapted from The BEST Chocolate Chip Cookies by Sofi | Broma Bakery. I didn’t create the original recipe. My version keeps the browned-butter technique while changing the butter, brown sugar, and chocolate, and adding my own dark chocolate topping.
You can find the original recipe on Broma Bakery.
I love finding recipes that inspire me and then experimenting until I find the flavors and techniques that work best for me.
And these cookies? They’re definitely one I’ll keep coming back to.
